GREENUSA MARIJUANA HALL OF SHAME

The four people featured on this page are the people most responsible for the USA's dysfunctional drug policy

Harry Anslinger - Director of the Bureau of Narcotics the predeccesor to todays DEA.  Anslinger was tireless, paranoid, and an ultra-racist -- consider the following quotes:

“There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos, and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz, and swing, result from marijuana use. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers, and any others.”

“…the primary reason to outlaw marijuana is its effect on the degenerate races.”

“Marijuana is an addictive drug which produces in its users insanity, criminality, and death.”

Reefer makes darkies think they’re as good as white men.”

“Marihuana leads to pacifism and communist brainwashing”

“You smoke a joint and you’re likely to kill your brother.”

“Marijuana is the most violence-causing drug in the history of mankind.”

William Randolph Hearst - also an ultra-racist, he lost 800,000 acres to Pancho Villa, so he hated Mexicans who were associated with marijuana.  Also, Hearst, because his publishing empire owned huge amounts of timberland, and hemp had started to compete with Hearst's trees, Mr. Hearst   waged an epic propaganda campaign against marijuana.

Nancy Reagan - USA First Lady 1981-1989

Mrs. Reagans oversimplifed approach to dealing with drug addiction set us back decades.  She lumped marijuana in with drugs such as meth and heroin, and thought that one could beat a full-blown addiction by, "Just saying NO."  Mrs. Reagan's husband, Republican Ronald Reagan, who  won the presidency in part by sowing the seeds of fear against: welfare queen & menacing thugs.  Reagan was only to happy to expand Nixon's War on Drugs and the costs increased even more.

Richard Nixon - was USA President from 1968 - 1974.  After the Democrats passed Civil Rights and Poverty laws (post JFK mid 1960's), the once "solid south" (for Democrats) went Republican.  Nixon's plan to keep the deep south in the Republican column was to play off of the south's latent racism and he launched the War on Drugs (ostensibly going after blacks, mexicans and hippies).

Thirty years later a TRILLION dollars has been spent, there are still just as many drugs, and, an entire generation of young men languish in cages.
